The late colonial Cathedral was opened in 1854, with the presence of Emperor Pedro I. Its inside was decorated by the Italian artist Colossi in 1929. The Cathedral has a magnificent organ that was solemnly used for the first time in 1947. The image of São João Batista, patron saint of Niterói, is in the high altar.
