Watershed of the basin of the lagoon system of Piratininga and Itaipu, it is the natural boundary between the municipalities of Niterói, São Gonçalo and Maricá, covered by the Atlantic Rainforest in good conditions. It is a permanent protection area; therefore, you can still find Cuniculus pacas, Callithrix penicillatas, armadillos, in addition to a great number of birds.

In the lowlands, where the forests had valuable timbers such as Persea indica and Paubrasilia echinata, deforestation made way to agriculture and urbanization. Important plants from the Atlantic Rainforest flora can still be found in the woods of the hills of the region.
