The area of Prefeito Ferraz Park, the official name of São Bento Field, was part of a large territory owned by the Benedictine monks in the mid-17th century. In 1908, it was finally urbanized according to the project made by the Belgian landscape architect Arséne Puttemans.

It is the main public garden in Niterói, with an area of about 36,000 square meters, and is in the heart of the neighborhood of Icaraí, in Southern Niterói. It houses a small amusement park and, on weekends, a large handicraft fair. It includes the Joaquim Távora School Institution, the Paschoal Carlos Magno Cultural Center and the Júlia Cortines Kindergarten. It offers numerous attractions, such as Clube do Curió meetings, exhibitions, book launches, concerts, courses and film and video screenings.
